The Ashe Hospital Pantry was the first pantry in North Carolina addressing the correlation between health and nutrition. The Ashe Hospital Pantry is the first of only three pantries operating in a hospital in North Carolina. Ashe Memorial Hospital has implemented changes to screening practices to identify patients who may be experiencing food insecurity. The goal of this collaborative effort is to provide these individuals with a box of nutritional, diet appropriate food to take home and direct them back to the Ashe Food Pantry for additional food assistance as needed. Stocked with healthy food options, the pantry provides easy access to nutritional assistance for those who may need it as they are discharged from Ashe Memorial Hospital. This ready access to healthy food helps reduce chronic disease and conditions, promotes recovery, and serves as a first step toward food security. Partnering with Ashe Memorial Hospital and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, together we strive to improve the community’s health one patient at a time.
